February SPOTlight: Help End Period Povery

Who: Girls Who Give Back & TWR for The SPOT Period

Period poverty is a term for the social, political, economic, and cultural barriers people face when it comes to accessing menstrual products, education, hygiene facilities, and sanitation. Things such as access to running water and sanitation products are a huge barrier for many underserved communities.

On February 20th, 2021 No More Secrets Mind and Spa opened the SPOT Period. Located in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA, the SPOT is dedicated to ending period poverty “to decrease uterine care and menstrual health disparities in underserved communities through the eradication of societal stigma”. They have offices, a reception area, computer room, storage space for menstrual supplies and a “Breonna Taylor” safe room. The Breonna Taylor room provides a safe space for women and girls to discuss crucial conversations regarding bodily autonomy, consent, healthy relationships, health and hygiene, uterine care, and more.

The SPOT gave out over 2 million menstrual products last year and was named one of the best rising wellness organizations in the city 2021.
Other ways to get involved: advocate! Write, vote and urge your local representative to pass bills that include menstrual products as a part of government benefits, SNAP, etc.

Boost Your Immune System This Season: Take a Trip to Our Tonic Bar!

JESSICA LIS, WELLNESS EDITOR

Jessica Lis is the Wellness Editor for The Wellness Refinery’s online blog. She graduated from Temple University with an English Degree and a concentration in Creative Writing. When she’s not writing for the blog you can find her cozied up next to a book or riding her bike around the city.

Love it or hate it - Winter is among us! Cold dark nights are a nightmare for our immune system. With Flu season and COVID 19 variant Omicron among us it’s super important to make sure we take care of our bodies, inside and out. You can strengthen your immune system by getting plenty of sleep at night, washing your hands, minimizing stress, increasing your consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, and SWEATING!

Foods that contain key ingredients to promote a healthy gut, reduce inflammation and promote healthy liver function can ensure a strong immune response against viruses and other pathogens. Most of our drinks contain important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants when it comes to fighting illness. Antioxidant is a general term for any compound that’s able to neutralize molecules called free radicals that damage DNA, cell membranes, and other parts of cells located in our bodies. Antioxidants give up some of their own electrons in order to stabilize free radicals that are stealing electrons from other molecules thus damaging those molecules and causing chaos in the body. Our body creates free radicals in response to environmental toxins, such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays, and air pollution. A certain amount of free radicals in the body is normal, however, they are damaging to our immune system. If you’re not a science person, like me, let me sum it up for you: Antioxidants are powerful compounds in our foods that prevent or delay various types of cell damage, thus boosting our immune system. Examples of antioxidants include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, iron, copper, and zinc.

New Year's Affirmations + Intentions Based off Your Astrological Sign

With the New Year upon us, let this be your year of wellness, whether it’s intellectual, spiritual or mental.   The New Year doesn’t have to mean resetting; let yourself continue or even amplify your wellness journey. Rather than New Year resolutions, think of these as New Year intentions!

Read below to find out what or who you should be focusing your energy on this new year. These intentions are based on your rising (also known as ascendant) sign. Your rising sign is how others see you - your first impression upon people and how you look outward in the world. According to some astrologers the year of 2022 will be less intense astrologically than 2020/2021. However, how astrology manifests on a macro level is not the same on a micro level. Some things that are true to the world may not always be true to you.To figure out your rising sign you can go to Astro.com, ask an astrologer friend or use an app such as Coststar.

P.S. you'll need to know the exact time you were born!

Capricorn: December 22 – January 19

Capricorns thrive off new year's resolutions - they love having goals to look forward to. If you are a Capricorn I invite you to slow down this new year, put away your straight-laced and hardworking side, and be in the moment. Start a project with no expectations of the outcome and see where it takes you. I double dog dare you to choose a project that you know is impossible for you to complete.

Affirmation: You are in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.

Aquarius: January 20 – February 18

Your eccentric qualities make you stand out in a crowd but sometimes you come off reserved. Whether your head’s in the clouds or staring at the screen in front of you, don't forget about your heart! We’re not saying don’t be your individualistic self, but this year set the intention of connecting with others. Don’t know where to start? Trying using these dive deep meditation cards to get the ball rolling. Listen, learn and grow from the people around you.

Affirmation: The chance to love and be loved exists no matter where you are.

Pisces: February 19 – March 20

Those with Pisces as their ascendant sign come off as aloof and lost in the stars. Strong personalities easily overwhelm you, Pisces rising. 2022 is your time to take charge! Light up the room with your charming and creative personality. As a pisces rising’ you can easily morph yourself to fit the energy of the room. Be yourself; embrace the chaotic and creative energy whirling inside your soul.

Affirmation: I embrace my unique individuality.

Aries: March 21 – April 19

Trailblazing Aries! I invite you to take a step back - you’re always charging forward. We love a person with initiative but this year try reflecting. Let the past guide your present and your future! 2021 had its ups and downs, harness the energy of the past and float into the present with a tranquil approach. Your buzzing nature might make sitting still difficult for you so try sippin your way into 2022 with a warm soothing cup of chill AF (hot) cocoa (you’ll thank me later)!

Affirmation: I let go of limiting beliefs and chose to focus on empowering beliefs that help me reach my greatest potential.

Taurus: April 20 – May 20

Those with Taurus as their ascendant come off as stubborn, dependable and fierce. You enjoy the finer things, not necessarily expensive, but things such as a decadent home cooked meal or soft linen clothing. You like being active and creative with your hands - doing things such as gardening, cooking or knitting. Your homebody tendencies mixed with COVID-19’s omicron strand makes this year the perfect year to learn a new skill (at home). Whether it’s weekly, monthly or the whole year, set the intention of teaching yourself something new. Try a new makeup look, recipe, or start collaging! Your home is your oyster.

Affirmation: I am never really alone because I am One with the whole.

Gemini: May 21 – June 20

Ah, Gemini. You’re always doing a billion things at once. This year you don’t necessarily need to slow down but try focusing on one project at a time. What do you want to accomplish in 2022? No matter how big or small you can do it. Concentrate on the task at hand. Once you’ve completely finished one, on to the next. Pause. Let yourself revel in the joy that comes with one accomplishment. Help yourself keep track of these accomplishments with a planner. Be proud of your projects (even the little ones)!

Affirmation: There are no limits to my ability to receive love and abundance.

Cancer: June 21 – July 22

We all know how much Cancer’s love taking care of other people. It’s in your nature. This year try taking your self care game to a new level with a rose quartz eye mask. Rose Quartz is the crystal of unconditional love and compassion. Open yourself up to love in a new way: loving yourself. This year starts with you.

Affirmation: I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.

Leo: July 23 – August 22

The shining star of the zodiac sign. Leo risings’ shine a positive light on everyone they meet. Confident and impressionable, I invite you to put down your phone and take a journey with yourself this year. No journey is too big or too small. Whether it’s a trip to Hawaii by yourself or 30 minutes from your home. Take yourself somewhere you’ve never been before and write, write, write. Feel the creative energy restore your mind and body and shine that light inside!

Affirmation: My body is healthy; my mind is brilliant; my soul is tranquil.

Virgo: August 23 – September 22

Everybody loves their Virgo friends because they are reliable. Do something spontaneous in the new year. Don’t make a plan (or for bonus points blow off a plan!) and do something you haven’t done in a while. Virgo’s are known for their love of nature: bring your yoga mat outdoors or ride your bike down a path you’ve never been before. Whatever it is, have fun and don’t think about it, just feel the moment.

Affirmation:  I allow myself to be who I am without judgment.

Libra: September 23 – October 22

Balance is key to a healthy lifestyle. Lucky for you, Libra Risings’, this comes naturally to you. But it must get tiring being the liaison between fair and unfair, your best friends arguing over how to split the bill, or your parents debating politics. You don’t need to please everyone. Stand on the sidelines and watch the balance erupt causing utter chaos. Take a deep breath.  Accept the things you cannot control.

Affirmation: I am constantly growing and becoming my best self.

Scorpio: October 23 – November 21

Scorpio ascendants' present as mysterious, alluring and intense. Allow yourself to relax, let that guard down. You are known for your extraordinary intuition. It’s time you start trusting others the same way you trust yourself. Fall in love with a stranger, play hooky at work, dive into the ocean after a big meal (okay, maybe don’t do that…) but let yourself be free. This new year let yourself get hurt, let yourself get messy and apply that energy to a creative project you’ve put on the back burner.

Affirmation: I listen to my intuition and trust my inner guide.

Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21

You, Sagittarius rising, are known for your brutal honesty, big promises (not always followed through), love of adventure and experimenting. The idea man. Sags’ love committing (half-heartedly) to projects and never completing them. 2022 is your year to follow through! Start a project and finish it. No matter how big or small, take steps every day towards a project of your choosing. Your project can be anything you want: romantic, intellectual, family related, financial, creative. Go on a second date; start a book club; see your project through. Plant your seeds and watch them bloom.

Affirmation: No matter how hard it is I can do it.

Self Care Tips to Keep your Holiday Season Full of Light and Stress Free!

Whether it’s money, time, family, work, moving, 2022 (already?!) etc. stressing you out this Holiday season here are some tips and tricks to help you get through the month of December and carry you into the new year shining bright!

1. Journal

Take a break from social media and write it all down. Journaling improves cognitive functioning, reduces stress and can even strengthen the immune system response. Jolene Hart prompts us to reflect on our energy influencers, our AM/PM routines and poses thought-provoking questions about our past, present and future in her book Shine On. The holidays are incredibly draining, reflecting on your energy influencers (sleep, food, work, breath, etc) can help you make the proper adjustments to better your daily life. So next time you're feeling overwhelmed by the thought of talking politics with Grandma on Christmas Eve, or figuring out New Year’s Eve plans, make yourself a cup of hot tea and get to writing!

2. Budget

In 2019 The average U.S. household spent $1,496 during the Christmas holidays (fortunly.com). Keeping track of your expenses with a budget book can alleviate some financial stress and also help you reflect on where your money is going. Are these brands and companies that are worth putting your money into? Stressed about how much you’re spending? Just remember it’s the thought that counts!

3. Practice Personal Hygiene

This may seem like a simple one, however, it is soooo important. The days are shorter, nighters are longer and the air is definitely chillier! Winter can be difficult for a lot of people and just getting out of bed can feel exhausting. Basic hygiene is a form of self care that can be super difficult during the holidays. Brush your teeth for the full two minutes and give yourself some “you” time. Activities that force us to tune into our senses are often very soothing, and the added sensory input can help people feel more grounded and mindful rather than just completing the activity while worrying about something else. Start your day with a fresh mind or let your brain unwind from the hustle and bustle of the day by focusing on the simple task at hand and nothing else.

Bonus: upgrade your shower by adding Leif’s Floral shower drops. Lavender is known to help alleviate stress and calm our mind/body.

4. Seek support

Plan dinner with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while. Don’t be afraid to vent to your mom, great Aunt, brother, coworker, whoever! The holidays can be lonely but you are not alone. Feeling overwhelmed with emotion but not sure where to start? Try using Dive Deep Meditation Cards to spark conversation and guide reflection.

5. Sweat it out!

Regular sauna use lowers cortisol levels - the body’s main stress hormone. Infrared saunas increase relaxation by optimizing the production + reception of the natural antidepressants in our brain (dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin) thus reducing feelings of frustration and anxiety. So while you’re out and about buying everyone else gifts remember to take the time and treat yourself! Sweat out all the holiday stress and try meditating or listening to calming music during your sauna sesh.

P.S. we’re having a BOGO SALE: On 12/14 ONLY get two 30 minute infrared sauna sessions for $40

What’s a typical day like for small business owner, Ashleigh Stewart? I asked the hard hitting questions to get the inside scoop at TWR!

What time do you wake up? Ooo this varies pretty frequently. Sometimes I'm up at 6 am and other days I do not get out of bed until 9 am. I really listen to my body. Sleep is one of the most important restorative practices for me and I am so fortunate that I have such a flexible schedule to allow this.

Are you a morning person or a night owl? What's your optimal number of sleep hours you get in a night? 1000% a morning person. Even on the mornings I sleep in, I try to get up as quickly as I can to still enjoy some of the morning to myself. I always prefer to do my skincare in the morning too. It is just when I feel my best. I always aim for at least 8 hours.

Drop your AM skin care routine! I'm using a skincare regimen recommended by our friends @victoriaroggiobeauty...double cleanse with Reflekt Daily Exfoliating Face Wash, tone with Biologiue Recherche Lotion P50 1970 and finish up with my absolute favorite Golden Hour Recovery Cream from Ursa Major. I'm super simple. I can't get behind a long skincare routine. It's just not my thing.

Breakfast: sweet or salty? SWEET, like always. I very rarely crave salty but mostly because I'm allergic to eggs so my default breakfast items are usually sweet.

Caffeine or caffeine free? Eeek caffeine free has been my lifestyle for as long as I can remember. BUT I do love me some matcha. Our Lioness Matcha is one of my favorites to set me up for a productive day. And I can't lie, I do absolutely love the smell of coffee so I sometimes will give in and grab a latte but I never wind up finishing it.

What do you do to combat the midday slump/post-meal need to nap vibe? I nap! Or go for a walk! Working such a flexible schedule really does allow me to take time for myself in the middle of the day which is so nice. I notice that I only feel the slump when I don't occupy my time though so if I have afternoon meetings, I'm usually pretty energized and ready to tackle them. And don’t get me wrong this wasn’t always my schedule!

What's one thing you never get bored of in your daily routine? Drinking water from a mason jar! Water is truly my favorite and I drink so much of it.

What are some work habits you have that keep you on track of your goals? I’m a big list person! I have lists for everything. Lists for smoothie or latte ideas. Lists for social media content ideas. To do lists too, of course.

Any apps you use daily? Well definitely my Gmail app, my calendar app is always a lifesaver to let me know where I need to be and when and Slack to stay connected with my team when I’m not in store!

What are some things you do to create a healthy work life balance? This is always tough because my work is my life. I truly love working but I can’t lie I do get burnt out from time to time. I’d say I always take my mornings for myself (whenever my schedule allows) so that I can truly reconnect with myself and set myself up for a day of success.

Drop your PM skin care routine! Um…lol just go to bed! But seriously I’m the worst at nighttime skincare! If I have a chill night in and decide I want to do a face mask, I’ll go all out but that doesn’t always happen. What is a big part of my PM routine is a warm cup of tea and my daily journal though.

Dry brush + shower: at night or in the morning? I’m usually a nighttime shower girl BUT I love a morning sauna and I prefer to dry brush before the sauna rather than the shower. So if I’m sauna-ing in the morning, I’ll dry brush then too. But if I’m not doing a sauna that day, I’ll do it at night time before my shower.

Most rewarding part of your day? This is a tough one to answer but I really love laying my head down to rest at night and reflecting on how fortunate I am and how grateful I am to live the life that I live. I am definitely no stranger to hardships and heartaches but I truly can’t help to just be in love with the life I live and the person I am. Laying down at night is such a genuine time for me to remember that as I go through everything that happened through the day and give thanks for everyone and everything in my life. I also typically complete my daily journal at night and there is a prompt to write down three things I’m grateful for so it is always just a good reminder.

What are you working on this week? WOOF, what am I not working on? I just had a strategy & planning team meeting with my full time staff, finalized our October specials with Nona and Erinn and I’m so happy because I literally had no hand in it besides being the final taste tester—it’s so beautiful to watch your team take charge and crush it! I’m also bopping around the city from meeting to meeting.

What advice do you have for aspiring small businesses? If you run your business from your heart and always stay true to who you are, it will show and your clients and customers will feel your genuine desire to serve them.

Top Ten (Okay fine, 11!) Most Frequently Asked Questions about Infrared Saunas

JESSICA LIS, WELLNESS EDITOR

Jessica Lis is the Wellness Editor for The Wellness Refinery’s online blog. She graduated from Temple University with an English Degree and a concentration in Creative Writing. When she’s not writing for the blog you can find her cozied up next to a book or riding her bike around the city.

Here at The Wellness Refinery, we are all about infrared saunas. Wanting to learn more about your favorite self-care ritual? We’re answering your top ten (ehhh, 11!) questions about the coveted heated cabin.

  1. What is an infrared sauna? What are the benefits of infrared saunas?

    • An infrared sauna is a sauna that emits wavelengths of infrared energy to heat the body’s core temperature. The wave lengths are absorbed by the body to help cells turn over and regenerate quicker.  Benefits of an infrared sauna session include: a more restful sleep, relief from joint pain and sore muscles (who doesn’t love a post workout sauna?!), strengthening of the immune system, skin purification, and detoxification of the body to name a few.

  2. What should I wear in the infrared sauna? What should I do to prep for the sauna? Can I workout before?

    • Most people wear little to no clothing - wear what feels best. It is safe to wear workout gear or a bathing suit but if you do choose to go commando we require you to have one towel between you and the bench. While it is safe to work out pre-sauna, it’s so important to HYDRATE before your sauna but the infrared heat can aid in muscle recovery and help to alleviate muscular pain.

  3. Is infrared heat safe?

    • Yes. Infrared saunas use harmless infrared light (the same kind emitted by the sun) so they do not pose a health risk. The light used in our infrared saunas do not contain harmful ultraviolet rays!

  4. What’s the difference between infrared saunas and traditional saunas?

    • A traditional sauna heats the air around you using a physical source: a wood fire stove, or hot stones. A traditional sauna creates steam and heats up to about 160 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. An infrared sauna is generally 100 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Infrared saunas create heat using infrared lights. In addition to the infrared lights our saunas contain chromotherapy which is a vibrational technique used to stabilize ailments in the body. The colored lights trigger a response in the cells and organs to promote healing. Different colors promote different benefits! It is very similar to the soothing and warm feeling of sunlight on your skin without the damaging effects of exposure.

  5. How do you clean infrared saunas?

    • Each sauna is thoroughly cleaned with an organic wood safe cleaner and diluted vinegar solution for the glass surfaces. The sauna rooms are reset by wet mopping floors, disinfecting all touched surfaces (table, auxiliary cord, chromotherapy remote, stools and door handles) clean towels, towelettes and a fresh glass and carafe of water.

  6. Can I bring my phone in the sauna?

7. How can I make the most of my sauna experience?

  • Make sure you’re prepared: hydrate! Wear loose fitting clothing so your body still feels like it can breathe afterward.

  • Pro tip: try dry brushing beforehand.

  • Wait thirty minute to an hour after your meal to start your sauna: you want your body to focus on detoxing and not digesting. But then, of course, treat your body to a delicious meal post-sweat! Nourish your body with drinks from our Tonic Bar full of antioxidants; our oh so spooky flavors of the month are:

    • Dracula’s Smoothie: strawberry, banana, cacao, chocolate tahini, activated charcoal, date, strawberry beet chia jam

    • Apple Pie Smoothie: banana, spiced apples, oats, camu, cinnamon, vanilla, oat milk

8. What temperature should the sauna be?

  • The saunas are set to 158 degrees. The sauna will fluctuate anywhere from 130-158 degrees throughout your session. The infrared heat heats the body before it heats the air to encourage a longer session.

9. How long are the sessions?

  • We offer 30 and 45 minute sessions, do not exceed 45 minutes.

10. Who can use an infrared sauna?

  • Infrared saunas are generally safe for everyone, however discuss with your doctor before use if you are: pregnant, under 12, have a heart condition, or someone who cannot handle temperature extremes.

11. What after care should I be doing post-sauna?

  • We recommend showering about thirty minutes to an hour after your sauna to wash the toxins and sweat from your skin. On top of hydration, replenish your body with electrolytes, potassium, and calcium. Stop by our tonic bar to replenish!

Busy Week? Here's How to WinD Down for the Evening...

Summer 2021 has been hectic with businesses reopening, concerts coming back, numerous events happening, weddings etc. Now summer itself is winding down, no thanks to the Delta variant, so here are some ways to stay in tune with the new fall season and relax your mind + body.

Cut caffeine early, swap out tea for your usual coffee and why not add a tincture? We love love love organic olivia’s Liver Juice - it’s seriously a full body detoxification in a bottle. Feeling sluggish and worn down from a long day? Try a tall glass of ice water, add the juice from half a lemon for maximum benefits and a few drops of Liver Juice. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. This detox drink boosts the body’s natural immune system and keeps our skin glowing. Goldemine’s Adaptogen powder is a great addition to a smoothie, tea, or any beverage of your choice to consistently ease stress on the mind and body.

Avoid strenuous exercises before bedtime, instead try meditations and light exercises such as yoga, stretching or walking. Whether you’re #TeamBath or #TeamShower there’s no doubt both are great ways to wind down after a long day. To enhance your shower tie a bundle of eucalyptus leaves with a hair tie or rubber band, place upside down and tie around the neck of your shower head. Eucalyptus leaves contain the essential oils used in aromatherapy. It is known to help relieve stress and open up our sinuses. You can purchase eucalyptus bundles weekly in store at The Wellness Refinery from our friends at Myrtle + Magnolia or any neighborhood flower shop. Pro tip: roll the eucalyptus before placing in the shower to release the fragrant oils. If you’re #TeamBath try soaking with bath bomb. The ingredients in this bath bomb are known to soothe inflammation and moisturize our skin. Essential’s bath bombs are the perfect way to prep yourself for some serious zzzzz’s.

Lastly, and I know how hard this one is, put down your electronics an hour before you intend to fall asleep. Taking a break from social media is extremely beneficial for your mental health. Instead of scrolling through Instagram or Tiktok try journaling! Here’s a sneak peak of some prompts featured in Grateful Heart by Lamere: “Things I am looking forward to this month”, “How I will improve my wellbeing”, breathing exercises and so much more.

Top it all off with a few spritz’s of Functional Fragrance by Nue Co. on your pillow before falling asleep. This scent is designed to help de-stress and recenter your emotional + physiological state. It’s great for any time of the day but is an excellent way to wind down from a stressful day. Spray twice inhale for eight seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for eight seconds.
